Installing the Apollo runtime and sample applications
Back to: Apollo Documentation home page
The Apollo runtime allows you to run rich Internet applications on the desktop. To begin, you must install the Apollo runtime on your computer. Once you've installed the runtime, download the Apollo sample applications to see Apollo in action and to evaluate the underlying code.
Installing the Apollo runtime
Use the following instructions to download and install the Windows and Mac OS X versions of the Apollo runtime. You only need to install the runtime once for each computer that will run Apollo applications.
To install the Apollo runtime on a Windows computer:
- Download the Apollo runtime installation file (apollo_win_alpha1.msi) from Adobe Labs (http://www.adobe.com/go/getapollo).
- Double-click the apollo_win_alpha1.msi file.
- An installation window is displayed. Follow the prompts to complete the installation.
- If you have created or modified the mms.cfg file used by Flash Player, please remove it while running Apollo applications. On Windows, the file is located in the Macromedia Flash Player folder within the system directory (for example, C:\winnt\system32\macromed\flash\mms.cfg on a default Windows XP installation).
To install the Apollo runtime on Mac OS:
- Download the Apollo runtime installation file (apollo_mac_alpha1.dmg) from Adobe Labs (http://www.adobe.com/go/getapollo).
- Double-click the Adobe Apollo.dmg file.
- An installation window is displayed. Follow the prompts to complete the installation.
- If the Installer displays an Authenticate window, enter your Mac OS user name and password.
- If you have created or modified the mms.cfg file used by Flash Player, please remove it while running Apollo applications. On Mac OS, the file is located at /Library/Application Support/Macromedia/mms.cfg.
Installing the Apollo sample applications
The Apollo Alpha 1 release includes a number of Apollo sample applications.
To install and run a sample application:
- Download the sample AIR file from Adobe Labs (http://www.adobe.com/go/apollo_samples).
- Double-click the AIR file.
- In the Installation window that is displayed, select installation options, and then click the Continue button.
After the installation is complete, open the application:
- On Windows, double-click the application's icon on the desktop or select it from the Windows Start menu.
- On Mac OS, double-click the application's icon, which is installed in the "Applications" sub-directory of your user directory (for example, in Macintosh HD/Users/JoeUser/Applications/) by default.
The application opens in the Apollo runtime environment.
Note Check the Apollo Alpha 1 release notes for updates to these instructions.
Running an Apollo application
Once you have installed the Apollo runtime and the Apollo application you want to run, running the application is as simple as running any other desktop application:
- On a Windows computer, double-click the application's icon (which may be installed on the desktop or in a folder), or select the application from the Start menu.
- On Mac OS, double-click the application in the folder in which it was installed. The default installation directory is the Applications subdirectory of the user directory.
